18. StarForce DRM potentially compromises Windows operating systems' security. In Windows 2000 and all subsequent versions of the Windows operating system, Microsoft implemented a new security measure which graduated access to various operating system functionnalities. Thus, Windows' later versions are more secure because ring 3 (user level) applications do not have access to ring 0 (system level) functions. The drivers contained in StarForce DRM, however, provide ring 3 applications access to ring 0 functions ("Security Compromise"). Consequently, any virus or trojan which gains control of any application installed on the same computer with StarForce DRM can then control the entire computer system (a process called "Escalation"), notwithstanding Windows' graduated access system.
