Visual walkthrough: The horses

Thanks Dusan

You need a mechanical heart before you can solve this puzzle. If you don't have it yet, then there's nothing to do (yet).

1. Insert the mechanical heart into the mechanism and press the shaft in the middle to activate it.
We can see that the horse-shaped hand at the top of the screen is moving around as we press the shaft. We will use this later on but now we'll focus on something else...

The main trick behind this puzzle is that each of the quarters of the mechanical heart corresponds to one (and only one) of the horses on the stage, as you can see in the following picture. We need to figure out the correct placement of plugs A, B, C and D within quarters 1, 2, 3 and 4 to make all four horses move.

Image

Let's test a random configuration of plugs shown in the picture below.
To position a plug, click on one of the slots of the mechanical heart. (Click it again to unplug it.)
When you've positioned all four plugs, press the shaft in the middle to activate the mechanism.

We could see that horse 1 moved. The other horses didn't react at all.
This means that we've just found a correct position for plug A (the one that corresponds to horse 1) and we don't have to touch this plug any more and we can focus on the rest of the plugs corresponding to the other horses.

Testing different positions of each of the remaining plugs, always one at a time, we can find out the configuration of all the plugs that will make all four horses move.
The correct configuration is shown in the following picture:

But we're not done yet. There's still the horse-shaped hand at the top of the screen that we noticed in the beginning.
We need to test each of the four possible positions of this hand together with the configuration of plugs that we figured out earlier to find out the one of the four positions that works (the horses on stage going even higher than usual).

The procedure is as follows:
Unplug all four plugs A, B, C and D and press the shaft in the middle of the mechanical heart to make the horse-shaped hand move to the next position. Plug all four plugs back to their correct positions and press the shaft again to see what happens. Repeat if necessary.

Image

After a few tries, we find out that the correct position of the horse-shaped hand is the rightmost one, and therefore the working configuration of the whole mechanism is the following one:

I loved the games so much I wrote walkthroughs for both of them but I didn't realize how many European people would use them and I fear I have used too many Australian terms and sayings.

I also talk and make jokes about things that annoyed me with Syberia I (and there were many things!!) so I think it sounds like I didnt enjoy the games.... but that's not true.
