OECD and Pisa studies

The final results will be published on Dec 4th 2007 but here's what to expect:

The PISA survey is the most comprehensive and rigorous international yardstick of secondary-school students' attainments. PISA 2006 was held in 57 countries that together account for nearly 90% of world GDP. It tested students on how much they knew about science and their ability to use scientific knowledge and understanding to identify and address questions and resolve problems in daily life. It also examined student performance in reading and mathematics, and collected data on the student, family and institutional factors that can help explain differences in performance.

In short - we have the worlds smartest teenagers!

I really can't see the meaning of all those tests, and what's the problem of not being no. 1?

It might be good for Finland, but I wouldn't call it bad for all the other countries (only one contry can be no 1) and perhaps the other countries are better at other things.

I don't know if Finland rocks, never been there (hopefully I will some time...)

Well, you take this too seriously. So no points for you :) The meaning of these tests are to evaluate the quality of the education. Finland is in top 3 if you read the whole report since there is no absolute way of choosing the number 1.

I don't take it seriously. PISA won't test me, so I really shouldn't care. And the test only shows how good you are at test, and I know people including myself, who can work better if they are not under some sort of pressure. So finnish children (or teenagers) are better at passing tests (and maybe the most of them likes the subjects that were included in the test)

Italy is in a really mean position, but no news... almost once a week we have surveys and tests showing how much our school/education system sucks bad.

I was in Helsinki three years ago on February, when it was -35*C in night and -29*C in day.
I love this city and country. Wish I could live in there even only for a year.
I'm really, really sorry for my English xx.
